Ecorche of the Human Figure

With Keith Gunderson

This class is an ongoing sculptural survey of the anatomy of the human figure based on the classic Ecorche or muscle figure. Students will be provided with armatures designed specifically for building the complete human skeleton and muscles in clay. Starting from basic volumetric shapes, the skeleton is then refined to full accuracy. The indivdual muscles are explained, their function and shape are demonstrated and they are then applied to one side of the complete skeleton.
Lectures on form and function are provided as well as ideas on the aesthetics of artistic anatomy.
Students will provide the non-sulfurated clay as suggested in the materials list as well as sculpting tools, drawing materials, and a sketchbook to monitor their progress.

Artistic Anatomy

With Keith Gunderson

Learn the elements of artistic anatomy, proportion, and design along with principles and techniques of drawing. Work from the model to incorporate anatomical knowledge and volumetric drawing into personal expression. Beginning with the action and gesture, students learn how to develop natural proportion. Instruction progresses with an introduction to the Mannequin- a volumetric based approach to the figure. Building upon these two core foundations the student then can implement the concepts of Muscle Groups, Tension, Light & Shade, Camber, and Bi-Lateral Symmetry. Anatomical Composition will be explored, as well as the Golden Mean and the Seven Laws of Folds.
